FAQ

What is Visual Therapy (VT)

VT consists of eye exercises which are custom designed to train the eyes to work more efficiently. It is a process of educating the eyes to work optimally.

Why is this necessary

Unfortunately, most children are simply not taught how to use their eyes in an efficient manner. While some children do teach themselves how best to use their eyes to gather information from the world around them, many are not able to do this. They will start using compensating skills for visual tasks. This uses an inordinate amount of brain power to make up for the inefficient eye movements.

Problems with Reading

A lack of visual skills is especially problematic when first learning to read. While the brain needs to expend energy during reading, ideally only a small proportion of this energy needs to be used by the eyes to enter information into the brain. A large proportion of energy can then be used by the brain for understanding the input information. When the eye muscles are not being used correctly, a disproportionate amount of energy will be used by the eyes simply to input information into the brain. This causes difficulty in comprehension and understanding, as the child will tire quickly when reading.

VT

Children who lack basic visual skills need to be re-taught how to use their eyes to function correctly. Through a series of customised eye-exercises, we teach and strengthen visual skills which were not initially learnt correctly. This frees the brain to focus on understanding and visualising what is being read. Once these basic building blocks are put in place, children begin to excel academically and on the sports field.
